It takes only a few seconds to calculate BMI. Enter your height and weight, press a button, and you receive a number followed by a label such as “healthy weight,” “overweight,” or “obesity.”
Because the result looks so official, it is easy to assume that BMI provides a definite medical conclusion. However, that is not what the calculation was designed to do. BMI, or Body Mass Index, measures body weight relative to height.

Can a Healthy BMI Be Misleading?
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is commonly called the healthy-weight range, but the label should not be mistaken for a clean medical report.
A person within this range can still have high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, poor cardiovascular fitness, inadequate nutrition, or abnormal blood glucose.
Smoking, excessive alcohol use, insufficient sleep, chronic stress, inactivity, and family history can increase health risks without changing BMI.
