BMI is more standardized. If your height and weight are correct, different BMI calculators should produce essentially the same number.

When Is BMI More Useful?

BMI is correlated with more direct measurements of body fat across many populations, which explains why it remains widely used. However, it measures excess weight rather than excess fat and becomes less informative when applied to certain individuals.

Consistency matters more than constantly chasing a supposedly perfect percentage. Use the same measurement method under similar conditions and focus on trends over weeks or months.
A small change between two readings may simply reflect hydration or measurement error. It should not automatically be interpreted as real fat gain or loss.
Should You Track BMI, Body Fat, or Both?
Using both measurements can provide more context, but they should still be combined with other health indicators.
BMI gives you a standardized weight-to-height category. Body fat percentage estimates the composition behind that weight. Waist circumference adds information about abdominal fat, which BMI cannot locate.
Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, physical fitness, strength, sleep, nutrition, medications, and family history help reveal what is happening beyond your appearance.
Consider a muscular person with a BMI of 27, a moderate waist measurement, strong cardiovascular fitness, and favorable medical tests. Their BMI alone may exaggerate concerns about excess fat.
